University Climbing Competition Software
Free scoring for student-led intercollegiate events
University climbing competitions sit outside the federation pipeline — student organizers, tight budgets, single-event scrambles or short series. JudgeMate handles registration, live scoring, and category management at zero cost regardless of athlete count. The in-app self-reporting flow scales from 50-athlete club events to 300-athlete intercollegiate weekends.
What student events actually need
University climbing competitions are typically scramble-format events organized by student climbing clubs. The constraints are different from federation events:
- Budget is tight or zero. Student clubs cannot pay 300€/day for federation-grade software.
- Volunteer staff. Setup happens in a few hours; the event runs with student volunteers, not certified judges.
- Mixed-skill field. Categories often blend competitive and casual climbers, with explicit beginner divisions to keep participation broad.
- Multi-venue or single-day. Some events tour between campuses; others happen at one university gym across a single day.
The stack needs to be free, fast to configure, and forgiving of last-minute changes.
How JudgeMate fits university events
JudgeMate covers the student-event use case with no setup overhead:
- Free for organizers — student clubs do not budget for software. The platform charges nothing for events of any size.
- 10-minute event setup — registration page, problem list, category configuration, boulder number tags ready to print.
- Self-reporting flow — no judge per problem. Athletes sign in to JudgeMate on their phone, open the event, and tap their result on each numbered boulder. Volunteer staff watch the dashboard for anomalies rather than counting attempts.
- Custom categories — student events often need divisions like "Open", "Intercollegiate Beginner", "Women's Open" that do not match standard IFSC age groups. Configure any category set freely.
- Multi-venue support today — each round / host gym is a standalone event in JudgeMate. Series organisers create one event per round and aggregate cumulative standings via per-round PDF/Excel exports + a master spreadsheet. Native multi-stage events with parent-child linking and automatic best-N season aggregation are on the roadmap.
No federation contracts, no athlete licence checks, no broadcast integration. The student club gets the scoring infrastructure without the federation overhead they do not need.
Example: 200-athlete intercollegiate scramble
A typical multi-university scramble event configured in JudgeMate:
- Event — Intercollegiate Bouldering Series 2026, hosting venue: University Climbing Center.
- Categories — Men's Open, Women's Open, Men's Intercollegiate Beginner, Women's Intercollegiate Beginner, Mixed Recreational. Five divisions track separately.
- Boulders — 25 problems set by university routesetters across the gym, with grade distribution: 7 easy / 10 intermediate / 6 hard / 2 elite.
- Scoring — Flash 15 / Top 10 / Zone 5 (scramble standard). Custom point values configurable if event needs them.
- Boulder number tags — printed and laminated for each of the 25 problems (B1-B25). Athletes find the matching boulder number in the JudgeMate app to submit their result.
- Public leaderboard — URL shared on event social media. Spectators, parent universities, and host gym all watch live.
- Awards — top 3 per category. Cumulative season standings (if the event is part of a multi-stop series) aggregated manually from per-round PDF/Excel exports today; native season aggregation is on the roadmap.
Full setup time: 1-2 hours including tag printing. Volunteer staff at the event focus on safety and logistics, not scoring math.
Compared to alternatives for student events
Most climbing competition platforms target gyms or federations, not student organizations. Realistic options for a student club:
- JudgeMate — free for any size, no federation lock-in, full Polish UI for AMP-affiliated Polish university clubs.
- Spreadsheets — common for first-time student events. Works at 50 athletes, breaks at 200.
- TopLogger free tier — limited to 35 users; insufficient for intercollegiate events.
- FingerComps free tier — limited to 100 athletes; insufficient for series above that scale.
For university events with budget constraints and field sizes above 100, JudgeMate is typically the only no-cost option that scales.
