Vertical-Life Alternative for Bouldering Events
When each platform fits — and when it doesn't
Last updated: April 26, 2026
Vertical-Life fits IFSC-sanctioned events, federation-mandated workflows, and broadcast-grade production where official partner status is required. JudgeMate fits gym leagues, scramble festivals, university competitions, and multi-sport clubs that need scoring without per-event costs or feature gates. Both run live leaderboards and self-reporting; the practical difference is pricing, sport coverage, and federation lock-in.
What Vertical-Life is
Vertical-Life has been the technology partner of the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) for the results system rolled out in 2020. The company runs two products: a federation-grade competition management system used at IFSC World Cups and World Championships, and Smart Scorecard, a lightweight scoring product aimed at gyms and lower-tier events.
The federation product handles isolation rounds, multi-stage qualification, official rankings ingestion, and broadcast integration. The Smart Scorecard product covers the gym-level scramble use case with self-reporting via mobile app. Most national federations affiliated with IFSC use Vertical-Life by default for sanctioned events, which makes it the de-facto standard at the elite level.
Vertical-Life also owns 8a.nu, the largest climbing logbook platform in the world. This gives the company structural reach into the global climbing community that no competitor matches.
Pricing side-by-side
Vertical-Life publishes its event-day support fees in the official Competition Software Terms (Section 11.4): €300/day standby (request 30+ days pre-event) plus €65/hour for support effectively provided, both plus VAT if applicable. The base CMS license is on quote and varies by federation tier and event size — Climbing Business Journal coverage 2022-2025 confirms the product operates outside the publicly listed Smart Scorecard tiers.
JudgeMate publishes one number: events, athletes, and judges are unlimited at no cost. There are no per-event fees, no commission, and no feature gates between tiers because there are no tiers.
| Platform | Model | Known Rate | Athlete Limit | Public Pricing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vertical-Life (federation product) | Annual licence + standby support | €300/day standby + €65/hour event-day (plus VAT) — per official terms | Tier-dependent | Partial (support fees published, base licence on quote) |
| Vertical-Life Smart Scorecard | Per-event or annual gym subscription | On quote | Tier-dependent | No |
| JudgeMate | Free for organizers | $0 | Unlimited | Yes |
Feature comparison
Both platforms cover the core scoring loop: athlete registration, problem setup, real-time leaderboard, results export. The substantive differences sit at the edges — sport coverage, federation integration, and self-service.

When Vertical-Life fits
Pick Vertical-Life when the event sits inside the federation pipeline. Specifically:
- IFSC-sanctioned events — World Cup, World Championship, continental cup rounds. The federation contract requires the official technology partner.
- National championships affiliated with IFSC — most national federations use Vertical-Life because rankings ingestion, athlete licence checks, and protest workflows are pre-wired.
- Broadcast production — the federation product integrates with live TV graphics packages used by IFSC broadcasters.
- Existing 8a.nu communities — gyms tightly coupled to 8a logbooks get athlete profile sync at no extra cost.
If any of these conditions apply, Vertical-Life is the path of least friction. The pricing pays for federation compliance and a feature set built around years of IFSC operational refinement.
When JudgeMate fits
Pick JudgeMate when the event sits outside the federation pipeline or when budget rules out Vertical-Life entirely:
- Gym leagues and monthly competitions — recurring small events where 300€/day support fees do not pencil out. JudgeMate runs the same scramble format with self-reporting and live leaderboards at zero per-event cost.
- Festival and citizen comps — events of 100-400 climbers using the open-format scramble model. The QR-based self-report flow handles this without a judging panel.
- University and college competitions — student-organized events with no federation tie-in, where free tooling matters more than IFSC compliance.
- Multi-sport organizations — clubs and venues that run climbing alongside skating, football, ski jumping, or other disciplines. JudgeMate covers 36 sports from one account.
- Polish-market events — full Polish UI, terminology aligned with PZA conventions, and Polish-language editorial content.
The trade-off is straightforward: JudgeMate does not currently handle full IFSC isolation rounds, does not feed official world ranking points, and does not connect to 8a.nu. For typical gym, club, university, and league events outside the federation pipeline, none of those features are required.
Where JudgeMate falls short
Comparison pages tend to bury the weaknesses of the platform doing the comparing. We will not.
- No IFSC isolation flow yet. Full isolation rounds with strict timed observation, broadcast hand-off, and protest review are on the roadmap but not shipped. If you run an IFSC-sanctioned event, this is a hard blocker.
- No 8a.nu sync. Athlete profiles do not link to 8a logbooks. For climbing-community-tight events this is a friction point.
- No federation lock-in benefits. Vertical-Life users at the federation tier inherit infrastructure that JudgeMate does not provide — official ranking ingestion, athlete licence verification, multi-federation event templates.
- Smaller climbing-specific brand recognition. Vertical-Life has multi-year IFSC visibility. JudgeMate is newer to the climbing vertical, even though the platform itself runs across 36 sports.
None of this is fluff. If you need the federation features, pay for Vertical-Life. If you do not, the trade is in JudgeMate's favor.
Migration path from Vertical-Life
Most gyms running Vertical-Life Smart Scorecard can move to JudgeMate inside one event cycle:
- Export your athlete list from Vertical-Life — name, date of birth, gender, category fields. CSV is the standard format.
- Create a JudgeMate event and import the CSV through the registration screen. Categories map automatically by birth year (IFSC convention).
- Recreate boulder configuration — Flash/Top/Zone point values default to 15/10/5 for scramble events. Adjust if your previous setup used different weights.
- Print new QR codes from JudgeMate's boulder management screen. The codes are unique per event and per problem.
- Run a 30-minute test event with two staff members before the public competition. Scan codes, submit results, verify the leaderboard updates.
The full migration takes about half a working day for a 25-problem scramble event with 100-200 registered athletes. We have not built an automated Vertical-Life export importer because Vertical-Life's CSV schema is undocumented and changes between versions.
