A complete guide to the PZSW scoring system — judging criteria, Park vs Street formats, and how scores are calculated
Competitive scooter runs are scored on a 0-100 point scale across four criteria: Difficulty (30 pts), Variety (25 pts), Flow (25 pts), and Style (20 pts). Each rider performs 2 runs, and the better score counts. In Street finals, a Last Trick round (up to 50 pts) is added, bringing the maximum to 150 points. With a 5-judge panel, the highest and lowest scores are dropped and the remaining 3 are averaged.
The competitive scootering scoring system is built on four main categories, each carrying a different point weight. The maximum score for a single run is 100 points (or 150 points in a Street final with Last Trick).
Each run is evaluated by a judging panel. With a 5-judge panel, the lowest and highest scores are dropped and the remaining 3 are averaged — this eliminates extreme scores and ensures more objective results.
The system is based on international World Skate standards and is used at all official Polish Roller Sports Federation (PZSW) events, including the Polish Championships.
Judges evaluate each run holistically across four defined categories. The table below shows the point breakdown and what specifically affects the score in each category:
| Criteria | Description | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Difficulty (30 pts) | Technical complexity and difficulty of tricks. Judges reward risky, complex maneuvers performed consistently throughout the run that stand out from other competitors. | Complex trick combinations, rotations, tricks on large obstacles |
| Variety (25 pts) | Diversity of tricks and use of the skatepark. Runs that combine different obstacles and demonstrate versatile skills are scored highly. | Mix of tricks on different obstacles, creative lines, full use of the course |
| Flow (25 pts) | Stability and continuity of the run. Points are deducted for falls, foot slips, hand supports, unstable landings, and unnecessary pushes. | Clean landings, no wobbles, smooth transitions between tricks |
| Style (20 pts) | Aesthetics of the run — clean landings, height/amplitude, effortless execution while maintaining appropriate speed and fluidity. | High amplitude, light and elegant execution, confident ride-away after landing |
Park competitions can have up to 3 rounds: eliminations, semifinals, and finals. Each rider performs 2 runs scored on a 0-100 point scale. The best score from either run counts toward the final classification.
Street competitions can have up to 4 rounds: eliminations, quarter-finals, semifinals, and finals. Eliminations may use individual run or jam session formats (groups of 3-5 riders).
In the Street final, the maximum score is 150 points:
| Element | Park | Street |
|---|---|---|
| Max score | 100 pts | 150 pts |
| Rounds | up to 3 | up to 4 |
| Last Trick | No | Yes (1 or 3 attempts) |
| Jam Session | No | Yes (in eliminations) |
Last Trick is a unique element of Street finals. After all riders complete their runs, each rider takes turns performing 1 or 3 individual trick attempts.
Last Trick scoring:
This means a rider with a slightly weaker run can make up ground with a spectacular Last Trick — and vice versa. Last Trick adds unpredictability and excitement to finals.
Important: During Last Trick, riders have full freedom to choose any obstacle and type of trick.
Experienced judges use proven techniques to ensure objective and consistent scoring:
Judges note key elements: trick count, pushes, stumbles, unclean landings, and skatepark utilization. These notes support the final, objective score calculation.
The starting score threshold for the first rider should be significantly low. This provides room to work with higher scores for subsequent, better runs.
The highest scoring range (95-100 pts) is reserved for the best runs by top-level riders. In younger categories especially, judges should not approach this ceiling.
Each judge develops their own technique — some start with a high score and deduct for errors, others build the score from zero by adding points for individual elements.
"Harder tricks always win" — False. Difficulty accounts for only 30 of 100 points. A run full of very hard tricks but with falls and no variety will lose to a clean, versatile run of medium difficulty.
"Judges score based on the rider's appearance" — Absolutely not. The judges' code clearly states: "We judge the rider's run, not the rider and their appearance." Clothing style, protective gear, or accessories do not affect the score.
"One fall ruins the entire run" — Not exactly. A fall reduces the flow score, but if the rest of the run is strong across other categories, a good final score is still achievable.
"Well-known riders get better scores" — Judges are required to be objective. They cannot be influenced by a rider's past results, personal relationships, or popularity. They must maintain a "stone face" — showing no emotion during runs.
"Park and Street are scored differently" — The same 4 criteria and the same 0-100 scale apply. The format differs (rounds, Last Trick), but the scoring philosophy is identical.
Let's walk through how a judge evaluates a sample Park run:
Rider's Run (45 seconds): The rider starts with energy, performs a tailwhip off the quarter pipe with good amplitude, transitions smoothly to a barspin on the funbox. Then a flair on the big ramp (high difficulty, clean landing). A brief push, then a buttercup on the spine — slight wobble on landing. Finishes with a combo: kickless rewind off the hip.
Judge's Scoring:
| Criteria | Score | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Difficulty (max 30) | 24.0 | Flair and kickless rewind are high-difficulty tricks; tailwhip and barspin are medium |
| Variety (max 25) | 21.0 | Good use of different obstacles, diverse trick mix, but no coping tricks |
| Flow (max 25) | 19.5 | One wobble on buttercup landing, one unnecessary push |
| Style (max 20) | 16.5 | Good amplitude on the flair, generally clean execution, but wobble detracts |
| TOTAL | 81.0 | Solid run with one visible error |
Without the wobble, this same run could have scored around 85-87 pts.
