Volleyball Standings Calculator
Group table from set scores, with set ratio, points ratio and three rule sets
Volleyball tables award 3 points for a 3-0 or 3-1 win, 2 for a 3-2 win, 1 for a 2-3 loss and 0 for a 0-3 or 1-3 loss. Teams level on points are split by further criteria, and the order of those criteria differs. The Polish federation (PZPS) ranks by points, then wins, then set ratio, then points ratio. FIVB event rankings put wins before points. Enter your match results, choose a rule set, and the calculator returns the table with every ratio worked out.
Leave a match empty if it has not been played.

Three rule sets in the calculator
Pick the rule set your competition uses. They share the inputs (the points of every set, from which the calculator derives set scores and rally points) and differ in match points and in the order of tie-breaks.
| Rule set | Match points | Ranking order |
|---|---|---|
| PZPS league (PSO §51–52) | 3-0 or 3-1: 3 and 0. 3-2: 2 and 1 | points, wins, set ratio, points ratio, head-to-head (points, then sets, then rally points) |
| PZPS tournament (PSO §53) | win 2, loss 1, loss by forfeit 0 | as above (§52) |
| FIVB event ranking | 3-0 or 3-1: 3. 3-2: 2. 2-3: 1. 0-3, 1-3 or forfeit: 0 | wins, points, set ratio, points ratio, head-to-head |
The PZPS presets follow the Sports and Organisational Regulations (PSO) adopted by PZPS Board resolution 59/2025 of 21 May 2025. The FIVB preset follows the ranking system Volleyball World published for the 2022 men's Club World Championship. In the FIVB version, head-to-head means the winner of the match between the tied teams; with three or more tied, only their matches against each other count.
A forfeit enters the table as 0-3 with every set 0-25 (FIVB Official Volleyball Rules 2025-2028, rule 6.4.1), so it also feeds the ratios of both teams.
Set ratio and points ratio, and why a ratio
The PSO defines both terms in §1. The set ratio is sets won divided by sets lost. The points ratio ("small points" in Polish usage) is all rally points scored across the sets divided by all rally points conceded. The FIVB ranking page uses the same two divisions.
A ratio and a difference can rank the same two teams in opposite order:
- Team X, sets 9-4: ratio 2.25, difference +5
- Team Y, sets 12-6: ratio 2.00, difference +6
By ratio X is ahead, by difference Y is ahead. If your league sheet subtracts instead of dividing, it can put teams in the wrong order on exactly the rows where the tie-break matters.
A team that has not lost a set has no finite ratio, because the divisor is zero. Mathematically that is the best value there is, so the calculator places it above every team that has dropped a set.
Worked example: four teams, three different tables
One round-robin group, six matches:
- A 3-0 C, B 3-2 A, D 3-2 A
- B 3-2 C, D 3-2 B, C 3-1 D
| Team | Results | Points | Wins | Sets | Set ratio |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 3-0, 2-3, 2-3 | 5 | 1 | 7-6 | 1.167 |
| B | 3-2, 3-2, 2-3 | 5 | 2 | 8-7 | 1.143 |
| C | 0-3, 2-3, 3-1 | 4 | 1 | 5-7 | 0.714 |
| D | 3-2, 3-2, 1-3 | 4 | 2 | 7-7 | 1.000 |
The final order depends only on which criterion comes first:
- PZPS (points, then wins): B, A, D, C. B and A both have 5 points; B has two wins. D beats C the same way.
- FIVB (wins, then points): B, D, A, C. D has fewer points than A but one more win, so D finishes second.
- Set ratio straight after points: A, B, D, C. A's 1.167 beats B's 1.143, so the group winner changes.
Before you publish a table, check which order your competition rules actually state.
How a JudgeMate league ranks the same group
A volleyball league in JudgeMate counts 3/2/1/0 by sets by default, which matches PSO §51. Ties on points then go through one of two built-in presets: head-to-head, then set ratio, then points ratio; or set ratio, then points ratio, then head-to-head. Neither has a "number of wins" step. In the league Settings you can pick the PZPS league, PZPS tournament or FIVB rule set instead, and the table is then ranked by the same engine as this calculator.
For the group above that gives:
- Head-to-head preset: B, A, C, D. B beat A, and C beat D 3-1.
- Set ratio preset: A, B, D, C.
Neither built-in preset reproduces the PZPS order B, A, D, C or the FIVB order. If your competition plays under the PSO, choose PZPS league in the league Settings and the table comes out as in the example.
A new volleyball draw ranks its groups by the FIVB rule set by default: 3/2/1/0, with wins first. In the draw's format step you can switch to PZPS tournament (2 for a win, 1 for a loss) or PZPS league.
To run the season itself, start a volleyball league or tournament. For a single match, the live volleyball scoreboard counts sets to 25 and the deciding set to 15. The volleyball scoring guide covers points and sets within a match.
What this calculator does not do
This is a calculator for a match-play table. Unlike the calculators for judges' marks and climbing results (IFSC bouldering points, skateboarding, rhythmic gymnastics, dancesport placings), nobody judges anything here; the input is the scoresheet result.
- No golden set or two-legged ties. PSO §54 settles a two-leg tie by match points and then a golden set under CEV rules. The calculator has one match per pair (round robin, 3–6 teams), so a second leg between the same teams cannot be entered.
- No set score on its own. You enter the points of every set, and the calculator works out the set score and the rally points from them. A forfeit is the only exception.
- No drawing of lots, no shared places. The calculator numbers positions in order. A tie the chosen rule set cannot break is marked in the "Why this place" column as the organizer's decision. The Volleyball World ranking page has tied teams that never met share the position.
- Not an official table. Federation tables come from the organizer's records. Use this to check yours, plan a final round, or settle an argument in the stands.
