Run a padel tournament in Judge Mate

An organiser runs a padel evening on paper: two enclosed courts that finish their round on the same beat, so every card lands at once, and the next round cannot be drawn until the last one is typed in. Then the whole evening moves into the app — sign-ups with a seat limit and a waiting list, entry fees ticked off at the desk, americano with the round set to 21 and a golden point at forty all, a timetable that flags its own clashes, a link per match, two scoreboards signed off in one press, a table where the points you score decide rather than the matches you win, and a bracket with a real bronze match.

What the film says

The lines are burnt into the picture — the film plays without sound. Times are counted from the start.

  1. 0:02They play behind the glass. I keep score outside it.
  2. 0:07Never one at a time. Both courts finish together.
  3. 0:12Nobody can start round four until I finish round three.
  4. 0:22This is the last round I write.
  5. 0:27I pick padel first. The rest just fits.
  6. 0:32One draw for the whole night. I set it to americano.
  7. 0:41Twenty-one a round. Golden point at forty all.
  8. 0:50Full, and still taking names. They see their spot first.
  9. 1:00I tick off who has paid. Cash stays out of the app.
  10. 1:09Two came without a partner. I put them together on the spot.
  11. 1:17Two courts, one timetable. It tells me when they clash.
  12. 1:27Every match gets its own link. Whoever has it, keeps score.
  13. 1:35Both courts hit twenty-one. One press takes both.
  14. 1:48Five wins and still second. Points scored decide here.
  15. 1:58Four pairs, one bracket. Bronze is a real match here.
  16. 2:08Now the paper is optional. I print it only if I want.
  17. 2:17I put the results on the wall. Live, for everyone in the hall.
  18. 2:25No more paper wasted here.
  19. 2:29The gate is still open. The podium is already done.
  20. 2:35Tonight is round one. The ranking starts next time.
  21. 2:39Simpler.
